The German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) is one of the leading think tanks for global development and international development policy world-wide. Since its founding in 1964, the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) has based its work on the interplay between research, consulting and training.
The Institute’s Postgraduate Training Programme is concentrated on courses dedicated to development-related themes and issues bound up with shaping the process of globalisation as well as with improving trainee communicative and social skills. Once they have completed the Postgraduate Training Programme, the graduates find career opportunities with development organisations in Germany and abroad. In addition to the Postgraduate Training Programme, the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) offers young professionals from selected partner countries of Germany’s international cooperation the participation in the Global Governance School. The highly qualified participants from Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan and South Africa work in governments, ministries, universities, policy-orientated think tanks or research institutions.
The German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik is headed by Prof. Dr. Dirk Messner (Director). At present, the Institute has a staff of 100, more than two-thirds of whom are researchers.

Das Deutsche Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) gehört weltweit zu den führenden Forschungsinstituten und Think Tanks zu Fragen globaler Entwicklung und internationaler Entwicklungspolitik. Das DIE baut Brücken zwischen Theorie und Praxis und setzt auf die Zusammenarbeit in leistungsstarken Forschungsnetzwerken mit Partnerinstituten in allen Weltregionen. Seit seiner Gründung im Jahr 1964 vertraut das Institut auf das Zusammenspiel von Forschung, Beratung und Ausbildung. Das DIE berät auf der Grundlage unabhängiger Forschung öffentliche Institutionen in Deutschland und weltweit zu aktuellen Fragen der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Industrie- und Entwicklungsländern.
Im Rahmen seines neunmonatigen Postgraduierten-Programms bereitet das DIE jährlich 20 Hochschulabsolventinnen und -absolventen auf anspruchsvolle Aufgaben in der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit vor und zielt darauf ab, zukünftige Leistungsträgerinnen und -träger zu qualifizieren. In der 2007 gegründeten Global Governance School arbeiten junge Führungskräfte aus Wissenschaft und Praxis an Lösungen für globale Gegenwarts- und Zukunftsfragen. In der School werden Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer aus Europa und aufstrebenden Ländern wie China, Indien, Brasilien und Südafrika zusammengeführt.
Am DIE arbeiten rund 100 Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter, davon zwei Drittel im wissenschaftlichen Stab. Das Institut wird von Prof. Dr. Dirk Messner geleitet.
