Hello Doris, Welcome to Israel. Based on your post, it seems you have arrived today. I am sure you will find the environment surprisingly warm and accepting. Be sure to get a chance to visit the Dead Sea area. One of my favorite vacation spots there is Kibbutz Ein Gedi. It is an oasis in the midst of the desert. Make sure to bring your camera and many gigabytes of memory, as you will likely be amazed by all that you see and feel. Enjoy your stay, and be sure to let us know how it was.

Re^4: 60 years of Israel! from David Marcus Nossen (08 May 2008, 10:43 pm) in group "Israel"

I actually messed up, because I meant to say Yom Ha'atzma'ut sameach - Happy Independence Day, but unfortunately said Yom Hazicaron Sameach (where "happy" doesn't quite hit the right note - Yom Hazicaron commemorates the deaths of Israeli soldiers and victims of terrorism). Yom Ha'atzma'ut directly follows Yom Hazicaron, so I sometimes confuse them. Yom huledet means birthday. So, as you can see - though I usually get by in Israel - my Hebrew's pretty basic, too! In Israel, most everybody ...

Oh right. What you have to expect. Police presence and people being totally oblivious to said police presence and celebrating like there's no tomorrow, I'd presume.

Yom Hasicaron sameach? Or maybe Yom huledet sameach? (That's basically what I think, apart from feelings of "Thank G'd there's Israel!" and "Oh G'd, I hope Israel's still there when we'll actually need it!")
