Dear friends, China has "banned" all airlines in the country from joining the European Union's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) aimed at cutting carbon emissions. The authorities have also barred the airlines from increasing their fares or adding new charges for the scheme. The ban comes just weeks after the China Air Transport Association said its members did not support the ETS. The scheme, implemented from 1 January, levies a charge on flights in EU airspace based on carbon emissions. The ...

Global Concentrated Photovoltaic Market Growth and Investments from Dr. Nilgun Birgoren (09 Feb 2012, 10:46 am) in group "Alternative Energies and Sustainability"

Concentrated photovoltaics (CPV) is an upcoming renewable market that promises to provide cost-effective power generation at high levels of efficiency. The performance of a CPV system is dependant on the direct normal irradiance (DNI). Because of this major performance parameter, the number of regions ideal for CPV system installations is limited. According to Prof. Humayun Mughal, the potential market destinations based on DNI for the CPV technology are Southwest US, Mexico, Chile, Southern ...

Think Ink for Increased Efficiency from Dr. Nilgun Birgoren (09 Feb 2012, 10:41 am) in group "Alternative Energies and Sustainability"

One dollar per watt: that's the mark the solar industry is hoping to hit in order to become cost-competitive with conventional energies. In a bid to reach this magic number in the next two years, various Asian manufacturers are striving to reduce costs by increasing volume production. An alternative direction that will benefit the industry in the long term is to target increased efficiencies primarily through new manufacturing processes, new higher-quality materials for metallization and ...

Bhutan's Moving Gold: How water is powering the country from Dr. Nilgun Birgoren (02 Feb 2012, 4:30 pm) in group "Alternative Energies and Sustainability"

Dear friends, Bhutan is the last of the Himalayan kingdoms. The small country is situated in the nooks and crannies of the highest mountain range on earth. It's a special place that didn't have paved roads until the 1960s, was off-limits to foreign tourists until the 1970's, and didn't have television until 1999, the last country in the world to get service. The altitude and scenery are enough to take your breath away. In this country the environment is cherished. The kingdom lists ...

Dear friends, The European Parliament has passed a new law to curb dumping of electronic goods such as mobile phones, computers and TV sets in landfill sites. From 2016 EU member states will have to collect 45 tonnes of e-waste for every 100 tonnes of electronic goods put on sale during the previous three years. By 2019 the target must rise to 65 tonnes, or member states can opt to collect 85% of total e-waste generated. EU officials say only about one-third of e-waste is treated appropriately. ...

Ten Clean Energy Stocks for 2012 from Dr. Nilgun Birgoren (06 Jan 2012, 6:29 pm) in group "Alternative Energies and Sustainability"

There is a silver lining to the horrible year clean energy stocks had in 2011: the opportunity to buy clean energy stocks (often considered a growth sector) at prices one would expect from value stocks. Each year since 2008 I have published an annual list of ten clean energy stocks I thought were good buys at the beginning of the year. While the 2008 list was not really intended as an investment portfolio, my annual lists quickly evolved into a mini-portfolio of stock intended for hands-off ...
