Re: Freemium model : carrot on a stick?
Of course the "freemium" approach to monetarization is some kind of a carrot on a stick, it teases the customer again and again on his every step yet, other than the literal carrot on a stick, it allows for consumtion of said carrot.

Basically it allows for those who can afford more to do so whilst still drawing in those who cannot. From a player's point of view this can get frustrating if one is of the later group, but still, you get the "demo-feeling" and are allowed to experience what the game is like - without having to buy the "cat in a bag" first, speaking of common sayings. For the developer this model has more than just the monetary benefit in it, it also allows for direct feedback about how important and desired certain content-types really are, allowing for more purposeful content-creation and thus a leaner and cleaner production-cycle.
