Would it be too simplistic to suggest the coach is about the individual and a consultant is about the business?
I would love to hear some views on this.

Well there exists some Image Consultants - all about the individual - they tell individuals what they think the individual "should" change : hair, clothes, their walk, even to do plastic surgery...

Hey Darren, looks like everybody is talking about your elephant in the corner now. :-)
Sorry couldn't resist - it's my warped sense of humor.

Dear all,
Thanks to everyone that responded. I would like to add another thought to this posting.
Coaching is, I guess, like going to the doctor, you dont know before you go if the advice you get will be good or not, yet we still do it. What we dont do is pay the doctor for many visits in advance in the hope that he/she is a good. I think coaches could copy that model to make some clients a little more comfortable. This way, you both get a chance to see if you can work together, also then the client gets a chance to check if things are working out before continuing.
For example make it a monthly rolling contract. This also reflects more of a real world scenario for me. The coach will have some pressure to deliver as the client won't ever be a done deal in this case.
When all is said and done, I think Krissy is right, coaching isn't just about money and it could be dangerous to make it that way, but its still an element in there and folks want to feel they are putting it to the best use.
Thanks again everyone.
Regards,
Darren

For me, and my coaching, my goal is not to implant any -isms or -anities.
I point to the moon but that is all.
I remove or shatter accumulated psuedo truths and societal, educational, familial, political, cultural or religious falsehoods and poisons....
with ONE stated goal--to set people unconditionally, utterly free.
Free of me, too.
So if they can drop their problems in the first minute and leave, that is the best.
But as soon as may be, I clean their wings (sometimes tell them they had wings in the first place) and let them fly.
It is their journey not mine.
A "successful client" does not make me any greater and a 'failure case" does not make me any less.
They risk all, and so do I.

We're here to learn from each other and so I appreciate this question and all the responses. I'd like to respond directly to James first then to Sunny. I agree with you James that there are lousy consultants out there whose motivation and business practices seems to be primarily about greed pure and simple. That statement would also apply to coaches and I'm afraid the odd computer/consulting/health/enterprise/government/education company too...it's true of all business sectors, that said, consultants and all the others mentioned above are like books a few good ones make all the difference.
How can I say that? Simple, I was a brought in to work on an IBM project of some magnitude due to my unique firm's abilities and witnessed stuff first hand that I was "amazed" at and not in a good way. By the way companies like IBM have been embedding "consultants" with the client who are attached to bloated oversold software for years, talk about billing for consulting sake...There's a saying that goes, "nobody has ever been fired for hiring IBM." A very sad state of affairs when you've been on the inside of an IBM project...thankfully that statement isn't used much anymore...certainly IBM isn't perfect and neither is my firm fusedlogic, we're all doing the best we can. I by the way offer my clients a guarantee right on my website..."we won't stop until you hit your targets".
To Sunny, I believe that coaching does have specific value for certain people over and above chatting with friends over a glass of wine...most coaches are a well-trained sounding and advisory board for the individual or small group and most smart coaches align with human beings who are actually ready and therefore willing to tackle the really important stuff...the stuff way down in places you don't talk about at parties. These are the fears that hold us all back, the scary stuff we won't admit to...the lack of self confidence or self respect, things like that...and how that holds us back from kicking butt on our dreams, which are in many cases not clearly enough defined or actionable...so they help with that too...
They are there to ask powerful questions which shed light on the things you are unable to address yourself, helping you to attain clarity and perspective - that by the way can have tremendous value when you have a break through. As Krissy said everyone needs to find the right fit...the accountability comes from within not from the coach...typically I use measurement as a way to hold my clients accountable for their actions, they don't have to worry about me or my firm meeting or exceed their expectations...why? Because they're clearly defined and typically much lower than my own...
