Does the law of attraction with the "Ask, Believe, Receive" concept have its place in coaching? What about Clearly Defined Outcomes? Action Plans?
Coaches help clients to reshape their beliefs with Affirmations and to visualise their goals and believe and even sense that they have already realized them... but they also help them to take Action.
The author of The Secret (and her spokespersons in the book/DVD) claim that we do not need to be bothered with the how / the actions, only on the what/the goal, and then the opportunities will arise (that will need to be acted upon!!!). Though she briefly talks about Inspired Action, she does not clearly explain what that is.
Should we introduce the Law of Attraction to our clients?
Should we focus with them mainly on the What? Until it becomes real for them (since beliefs and affirmations also take time to be really embedded in the subconscious)
Should we request them to Plan, to Act, even BEFORE the internal voice is convinced, and the fear/doubt/gremlin put at bay? Or should they Act FIRST to reshape beliefs, build the confidence and overcome the gremlin?
What are your views? As a coach? As someone in the shoes of a client/coachee - even if hypothetically

Hi Rim, thank you for starting this thought provoking thread.
You have hit upon one of my big triggers and don't even get me started on The Secret :-) see my blog
http://laughingkiwinews.com/?m=200703 if you want more on my thoughts about that.
The law of attraction is a good starting place, BUT in my opinion thoughts without action are a waste of time…
I love the Chinese proverb:
The man who stands with his mouth wide open will wait a very long time for a crispy duck to fly in.
I feel very stronly that the idea of "Ask, Believe, Receive" is ludicrus and only sets people up to feel even worse about themselves when nothing comes of their expectations.
For me the law of attraction includes:
=> Be positive
=> Set goals
=> Take action
=> Visualize the outcome
=> Take more action
=> Imagine how good it will feel to achieve your goals
=> Continue taking affirmative action until you achieve your goals
It is my belief that clearly defined outcomes, action plans and accountabitity are what coaching is really all about.

It is amazing to me how many different interpretations I hear about the law of attraction.
Some pople say it does not work because they see it as a majic act.
It is actually an elaboration on the fact that a positive attitude has a tendency to inspire others to want to be with the person with the positive attitude.
A good mood is contageous.
Krissy you are so right about a commitment to action.
LOA is like the plan and the plan is just a pretty picture unless we move on from there and see what stands in the way of our achievement.
I was involved with "dream coaches group" for awhile and I thought it was good at first. Soon I realized that a large number of people were not really doing anything but feeling good and making others feel good. I found many of the "dreams" to be totally self centered.
There is a group in XING for LOA. We are pondering now if the LOA can work on a large scale. If it can, can we perhaps use it to explain what takes place when people pray for something together.

I prefer the second option. Reshape beliefs, build confidence and get the gremlin out in the light. From there on it is easier to talk about plan and act.

@Krissy
I like the way you alternate between Action and the Positive/Feel Good/Visualization elements – indeed they do go hand in hand. I don’t believe the Law of Attraction can change your life without taking Action.
But I also believe in the power of the mind – it attracts people, situations, opportunities. That for me is the law of attraction - of course that alone doesn’t make the changes happen. I need to seize these opportunities, react appropriately to these situations and do something about the people I meet – otherwise they just pass me by with no effect.
@Deborah
I totally agree with you: "A good mood is contageous" . If you are in a good mood it affects our behaviour which will have a knock on effect on others. And I think the more you are in a good positive mood, the more you also attract people in that state, and vise versa .
@ Brengt
I used to work on beliefs and gremlins first – to elicit them and then reshape etc before working on the action plans. But I have tried something different and it works for my clients much better: – to work on the beliefs/gremlins whenever they appear – and not necessarily before talking about the plan / action. I also ask my clients at the end of the session - what action they will take over the next few weeks to overcome the negative belief/gremlin or build their confidence, etc.
@Karin
Welcome to the group!
You brought up an interesting point:
"that reshaping beliefs is a great first step followed up with taking action. The right action, that is. The kind of action that makes you forget time, that you fully loose yourself in. Most people don't really know what it is they love doing and that's where coaching comes in".
And it gets me thinking:
Now what if, in order to move forward, the client needs to do something that they don’t particularly enjoy, to “eat that frog” to use Brian Tracey’s words? Would that be not as effective, will it have a negative impact on mood / attitude / outcomes or could it stretch the comfort zone and have a positive effect?

I am flexible too, beliefs and gremlins are dealt with when they appear. But plans made too early are usually not the best ones. When the client has worked on beliefs and gremlins they often realize that they want more or something different.
Action before the next session, a.k.a. homework, is useful (and needed) since it keeps the process running.

The universe itself is said to have its beginning from vibration. So we have the LAW of Action in the beginning and everything else happens as a result. One thing is guaranteeed, if you don't act... Nothing is going to happen.

Kishore. Great point. It is amazing to me how quickly some people will dismiss something as impossible because they do not understand it. An open mind is a terrible thing to waste. There are very few people in the West who really understand Vibration.
