I felt happiness that this young man is doing and living.
I felt a bit angry that BMW's ad a t the end is for hydrogen power which is very, very dirty to create and build.
But William could do better if he was at the helm of BMW!
I was in a stressed, fragile mood when I watched it.
So, what do I know?

Maybe BMW feels guilty about it's very, very dirty to create and build hydrogen power and that is why they are THE TED sponsor :-)
or not...

Indeed. Trust me --marketers will do anything to spin their practices by allying with green or whatever fads in their estimation. I hope BMW's polices go deepr and more holistically.. but out of ;60 seconds, only 5 are fact or even real content not just image fluff-like GE's enviro fluff.

I'd read about William before I saw this video. There's a lot going around the blogosphere about him right now. Apparently he used the Internet for the first time at the TED conference and was all over it -- seeing it's utility for his learning and diving right in. He's even blogging now, although it has only been weeks since he first used the Internet! (

I am deeply moved by the resiliance and inventiveness of human beings. A brilliant individual, William allows himself to see possibilities and not let circumstances get him down. He had to drop out of school, so he went to the library. He learned about wind-power but didn't say, "that's for other people" or "I don't have the right materials." He just did it. He saw the possibilities for himself, his family and community. Really cool!
Indeed, he is a remarkably bright, confident, poised individual who, with mentors and supporters as well as his own ingeniuty, will hopefully go far and make a significant impact. I look forward to seeing how this man unfolds in the world.
Thank you for sharing, Krissy. May we all remember to look for the possibilities!

There are many fantastic people like William not only in Africa but in the world. As an African child myself I am proud of William but not surprised by what he has achieved. He is pure, naive and hence not pigeon holed and told what he can and cannot do through schooling, pieces of paper (qualifications) etc.... There was a need and he fixed it and he has an extremely bright future aead of him. Give him ten years and some support and he will have a whole infrastrucutre "sorted out" in his village and surrounding ones. With William I am worried that he will be snapped up by a company and the essence of his creativity will be stifled due to business objectives rather than the objectives he has right now i.e. to improve the QUALITY AND BASIC STANDARD OF LIFE OF HIS VILLAGE AND SURROUNDING AREA.
We could all help him and others like him build Malawi from the ground up, using their solutions, knowledge and ideas rather than coming in "fixing the problem" with our ideas and thereby not teaching these people to be self sufficient. It has happened so many times -the Blue Peter appeal with the tractors, different types of cattle and grass - these are not practical or relevent to the specific problems -i.e. the tractors done have fuel and the locals do not have the know how to service the tractors and the big cattle do not survive or lose all their bulk due to te conditions.
In Zimbabwe it is a known fact that innovation runs free in places like Bulawayo. If your car or anything is broken, the local people like the Williams of this world will fix it for you with coke cans etc......
It is humbling to see appetite and get up and go in its raw form.

". . . and I try and I made it." These words will remain with me.
Listening to William's voice, I also thought about the American volunteers I organized this past academic year, who had difficulty interviewing applicants to our alma mater, a university in America, because they could not understand the African students when they spoke on the phone. I am not trivializing this difficulty. I am asking all of us to please try really hard to listen.
I would like to add that together, we interviewed about 95% of the applicants to our college from Africa. The statistics came out two nights ago. Apparently, my fellow alumni listened.
If you have graduated from an American university, you might volunteer to reach out and interview students from another part of the world. You might find yourself listening really hard--and hearing someone like William.

One person can do a lot.
I often hear people who are angry about what is going on in the world, say, "I can't do anything about it." If anyone has the power to do anything, it's us!
Any one of us who are reading this forum has enormous power, if he/she is willing. Most of us are too comfortable to make change.
William clearly was not too comfortable. That's so delightful to see!
