1. Make and respect your office hours
This is important for people who have trouble settling down
to and concentrating on their work and people who are so
driven that they forget to make time for themselves.
Set hours that suit you. This can be 9 – 5 8pm – 3am or any
combination that best suits you and your business.
Now let everyone know that these are your working hours and
that you will be unavailable to family and friends during
these times. Now make sure you use this time to work. If you
don’t respect your working hours, you can’t expect anyone
else to.
When your working day is complete – stop working!
2. Begin each week with a set of goals and each day with a
to do list.
Mark Joyner sets out an excellent 15 minute daily plan in
his Simpleology course.Taking 15 minutes to plan your day
means that not only will you achieve more, nothing will slip
through the cracks and you will manage projects effectively.

3. Organise your office.
Don’t start the day with a desk overflowing with papers.
Have a place for everything and everything in it’s place.
If you work from home give your office the respect it
deserves. This is the place you earn money to support your
home. It is not the ironing room, the junk room or the place
where you hide mess when guests come over.
Make a point of organising your office before January 1st.
4. Set aside time for social and business networking every
week.
This can be a physical event or a forum you are involved in
on the internet. If you’ve not tried business networking on
the internet, I’d like to invite you to come and join me on
Biz Building Blocks or The Entrepreneurs Playground on Xing.
5. Practice delegating
2007 is the year when you will stay on top of your book
keeping and invoicing – How? By hiring someone to do it for
you.
Unless you are a book keeper this is not your area of
expertise. And before you say you can’t afford one – stop
breath and think about how many valuable hours you waste
thinking about getting your book keeping done and getting
around to invoicing and then following up on late paying
customers.
Remember if you are late invoicing this gives a
subconscious/or maybe even conscious message to your
customers that this payment is not urgent.
6. Buy Business Plan and Marketing Plan Pro software.
This is great software! Build yourself a professional
business and marketing plan.
This doesn’t have to be done in a week or a month. Set time
in your weekly plan to play with it for half and hour
everyday in the beginning and then later for half an hour
every week.
These plans are not something you do and then put them in
the filing cabinet. They grow and expand with your vision
for your company.
Remember if you don’t know where you are going – that just
where you could end up NO WHERE. Make sure you have a target
and goals for your business.

7. Promote your business consistently
Your business will die if your customers don’t know about
you. If you think you hate marketing get some advice in
January about how to market inexpensively and effectively to
your desired cliental.
Start by signing up for marketing expert Robert Middleton’s
newsletter.

8. Keep learning
Small business owners, especially those working from home
often get left behind because they are not part of ongoing
education programs.
Join your Governing Federation or National Association and
go to residential or online courses which will further your
education in your field. Better still volunteer for a
position on a committee and keep up-to-date with everything
that is going on in your particular field.
9. Enjoy personal and family time
Small business owners often choose to start up on their own
just so that they can enjoy quality of life and family time
that are not afforded to their by long commutes and climbing
the corporate ladder. Unfortunately often the first thing to
be forgotten in the struggle to build a business are just
these two things.
Build quality of life into your schedule and keep to this
commitment.
10. Join the gym or a team playing your favourite sport.
Your business depends on your health. Make exercise the most
important appointment in your diary.
Getting fat, unfit and even sick is not the reason you started
your own business.
When you take better care of your health you are taking
better care of your business.
