Roberto BeraThe company name is only visible to registered members.Does anyone use RFID for positioning?
Last year I was involved in a very interesting research project. The goal was to make easier and safer the manoeuvres of big slow “vehicles” in a delimited area.
Automotive radars, infrared and laser sensors were not ok because we need to localize single defined points, not generic “obstacles”. GPS of market navigation systems are too raw (we need more precision) differential GPS are too expensive and useless (we don’t need to know where we are, but how we are far from…).
We tried RFID using UWB of Ubisense. The result were very interesting, but hw was still expensive for a large scale use.
Has anyone this kind of problem?
Which kind of sensor has he used?
Are there other experiences of use of RFID in this field?
Thanks in advance.

Dear Roberto,
I was involved in some projects, were we used passive RFID in combination with special 3D readers for positioning.
What are the distances/tolerances we are talking about ?

Hello all,
I am in touch with a customer who need such technology to track forklifts in an area with both open air and within halls and warehouses. Thus we can optimize the courses of FLTs and give transport orders to the FLT closest to a location where something has to be picked up.
My current information from yesterday's visit to the CeBit fair is that systems with passive tags are in use, but still not precise enough. And water on the ground in the open air area may prevent a precise reading. With active tags, we are coming closer to the goal. As already mentioned, Albis are currently working on a solution. Who else? I want to link the read position to actions like picking up or depositing a handling unit in order to track transport activities and update the warehouse management system.
Best regards
