Great questions lead us to think what does 'sustainability' means for individual and corporation or organization. Personally i do not think it is correct to narrow it down to the sense of 'developing business', but the same principle and philosophy arshoudl be considered by many government and NGO organizations as well.

Indeed, what kind of infrustratures and processes that organization/company put in place are important, but the most critical question we should ask is what and how to encourage individual to recognize his/her own responsibility and accountability that synchronized with the bigger goal.

Sustainability is not a project but an on-going efforts. It will be extremely difficult if peoople do not see their accountability in the whole process. It must be achievable and measureable.

You have show carrots in front of donky's nose (neither too far nor too close; neither too easy nor too difficult), donky will then show their strengths when they are motivated.

PS: what and how middle- & top-management demonstrate everyday are also critical to establish accreditibility to help people understand what does that really mean. People believe what they can see but not what manager/s try to preache. Therefore, if you consider about the leadership development as part of the process, then please make sure you know what and how to coach managers to apply the new learning skills. They need, too, to be evaluated and assessed periodically as well.

    1. communicate well and establish mutual consensus about management tool/s that we plan to use with people in advance before implement it/them.
    2. simplicity that people can implement & follow-up easily
    3. enhance communication once found team members in the other part of the world are not using the same tools.

    COMMUNICATION....COMMUNICATION......COMMUNICATION...........COMMUNICATION......

MANAGER AS COACH BUT NOT BOSS.

IT SHOULD NOT BE BOTTOM-UP OR TOP-DOWN, BUT SHOULD GO FROM BOTH DIRECTIONS UP & DOWN !

well, that's a very big subject because there are simply too many things involved in the sustain management development.

Here I can share with you briefly a project that I had the pleasure to work for Bull Informatica many years ago, at that time, the company had identified the needs to upgrade the international neogitation skills in global project management and team work. so I tailor designed trainging program for them and ran the same program twice a year. The company repeated the same program for at least 2.5 years. Eventually unfortunately stopped due to the budget cutting.

Because the success of the program, so they would like to put more people in the program, then I asked for a very senior manager from Bull to assist me. That gentleman not only a very experienced international negotiator, project manager but very resourceful in their technology. I interviewed each participants before the program, had very clear understanding about individual learning objectives and the program design and process consider the bridging of individual and organization needs in one. As a consultant, I focus on the process and he focus on the content The program is based on actual case but not on imaginative simulations, in a way you can say it's a combination of training, consulting and 1-on-1 coaching. Very tiring but very rewarding. Particularly when the French project team got compliment from their Japanese counter part about the seamless teamwork and pragmatic process. Then we know we have achieved the goal in sustain development within the organization.

Again, I used the same approach with the recent management coaching project. The greatest reward for me is when I am able to see the transformation of my coachee/s at end of coaching project.

Forgot to mention one thing --- all process and follow-up are very intensive for both trainer / co-trainer and participants.

    I hope this helps.

    Dear All,

I did not read all the correspondence in this article. So sorry If I repeated something which was already discussed. The Bruntland definition is very good but I found (no definition but principles of sustainability) a better one during my study in Sweden.

    The Four System Conditions...
In a sustainable society, nature is
    not subject to systematically
    increasing:
    1. concentrations of substances
    extracted from the earth's crust
    2. concentrations of substances
    produced by society
    3. degradation by physical means
    4. and, in that society, people are
    not subject to conditions that
    systemically undermine their
    capacity to meet their needs

    Thank you, Mira,

I really like the TNS framework because it covers environment, economics and social aspects (4th system condition). The framework summarised very complex things in 4 system conditions on a scientific base. What does system condition 4 contain?
    - is it sustainable if we use children's labour in less (industrial) developed countries? (difficult question because on one side this is without any moral but on the other side these families would have no income or an income on a criminal base or prostitution. The sustainable vision to come out of this is to employ their parents for an acceptable income, don't buy cheap products from Asia (based on children's work), ban these from the market...

What does sustainability means for me and my family (based on the four system conditions):
    - no Carbon dioxide footprint based on non-renewable resources (We use a heating pump for heating and hot water which is very effective. It transfers 25% of electrical energy to 100% "heat" because 75% are collected from the ground. Our supplier of electrical energy is based on renewable resources and only a little more expensive)
    - we try to avoid waste. (difficult to reach but we reduced it step by step)
    - if possible we consume fair trade products or from local sources or organic based vegetables, fruits and meat.
    - we supported to protect the rain forest in Costa Rica. (We "own" more than 20.000 sqm of the "Rain forest of the Austrians". This "compensate" our annual CO2-emissions and gives some people there the opportunity to earn some money in Costa Rica without burning down rain forest.
    - there is much more little things to add e.g. at least I know some points in which I'm NOT sustainable: Traveling and driving a car.

Mira, if you which I can email you a little of TNS framework and the system conditions as pdf. If you wish this, please add me to your contacts and let me know your email.
