    Program Introduction
In March 2006, the Center for the Study of Higher and Post-secondary Education at the University of Michigan began collaborating with the Wisbank Educational Consultant Org. and the Center for Management Training & Development in Michigan, on a program of professional development for university administrators. Over the last three years, this initial effort has developed into a very productive partnership. A total of forty-four individuals have come to Ann Arbor to participate in the ten-week program and upon their return to China, participants have assumed key leadership positions on their campuses. Furthermore, the experience has fostered lasting friendship among the members of each summer class, between classes, and between participants and Americans they meet during their stay.

The professional development program at the University of Michigan combines lectures and discussions about academic and management issues with site visits to institutions representing the diverse assortment of colleges and universities found in the United States today. During their stay in Ann Arbor, Individuals also meet with select University of Michigan administrators and researchers who work in areas of interest to individual program participants. In short, the goal is to give all participants foundational knowledge about higher education in the United States and to supplement this knowledge with specialized information that server the needs of group members.

A key benefit to faculty, students and administrators at the University of Michigan has been the exchange of information about contemporary Chinese higher education. These open discussions have highlighted many shared problems and issues as well as ideas for how to improve practices in the United States. The exchanges have also resulted in ideas for fascinating comparative research projects.
The foundation that has been established through the professional development program can support an array of initiatives. I look forward to the continued success of summer program and to other activities that may follow.
