LONDON. Spurred by its success at the Zoo art fair in London last October, Damien Hirst’s publishing company, Other Criteria, has signed a lease on a shop in Marylebone with a view to opening for business later this spring.
“We got such a great response [from Zoo] that we were inspired to take on this shop,” said Hugh Allan, Hirst’s business partner who co-founded the company with the artist in 2002. (Hirst’s financial adviser Frank Dunphy is also a partner, although he has no creative input.)
“It’s not strictly a gallery and it’s not strictly a shop—the range of products and works covers a rainbow of areas from very high end, high quality limited edition prints and books down to easily mass-produced items like t-shirts or postcard editions. Both Damien and I are interested in fine art and the arts generally and, as with all the things we do, it’s got to be fun.”
This principle will be expanded on in the Marylebone shop. “We are essentially a web-based company and there’s going to be a very strong connection between the website and the shop and vice-versa,” Mr Allan said. Specially-commissioned projects include a pair of pyjamas produced by Ashley Bickerton and a pillow being developed with John Isaacs.
