Hi everybody
I am currently preparing a course on PR & Networking at the Management Center Innsbruck. Amongst other content there is the question of possible goals of networking (this includes old style networking like e.g. in business clubs). Just now I wrote down the following list:
Knowledge (to gain ~)
Contacts
New business
CRM
Reputation
Benchmarking
Presence
Publicity
Power / influence
As you all are networkers: do you see anything missing?

Peter, I find that the most important area of networking (at least from a business perspective) relates back to Dr. Ivan Misener - I hope I correctly spelled his name - of BNI fame. Try to help others first and foremost and then ask others for their assistance. Too often we see the "WIIFM" (What's in it for me?) approach which soon turns off a crowd of prospective contacts.
Everything else will soon fall into place.

Larry, you're absolutely right. Thanks a lot for your feedback. The attitude has to be "what can I contribute". I would even go further and even not ask for assistance but rather hope that some day something might come back. But still everybody has some expectations. And this was what my question was about. What can I expect as a positve return? I'm trying to put together a comprehensive list of potential expectations.
