OpenBC becomes Xing - some research on the whole thing
Actually I was surprised when I heard that open BC becomes XING. Since I saw this discussion I felt like doing some more research on this topic.

I am a little confused in the whole thing. Peter, you wrote, the community hasn't been involved in it (that's right at least for the XING-thing), but as I could figure out, openBC had started an opendesign challenge couple of months ago for a redesign of the old open BC. (http://opendesign.openbc.com/finalists/). At the same time I found this article for the press from august:
    http://corporate.openbc.com/de/pressemitteilung/news/openbc-...

It even looks that in the end of September they had chosen a winner for a new design. The winner was told to be given 10000 Euro?! When I do now compare this design with the XING-Design I actually can't find any similarities: very strange! Has the winner ever seen his prize?

Further on, I found on the open BC Blog that on the 25th of September they decided finally to change the whole brand. (http://corporate.openbc.com/de/pressemitteilung/news/openbc-...). So this would have been one day before announcing the winner of the opendesign challenge. (I would have been really pissed if I would have been taken part at the design compitition and figure out that it was for nothing at all...)

Moreover I found on the open BC-Blog that Metadesign is the company who is responsible for the new brand (Title of the article: Metadesign Sets About Creating New openBC Logo...) This blog entry is written 15 minutes after announcing the finalists for the opendesign challenge.

This seems to be a huge mess. Or maybe I cannot follow. About the XING-thing in general: I don't like it either, but had to understand the whole story first before going into some details...

Well, something more I just found out: One of the five finalists of the design challenge left a comment on the blog: she was never informed that she was under one of the first placed and it seems like she never heard anything again about it...

And here you'll find a lot of supporters: http://blog.openbc.com/2006/09/xing_preview.html#comments – we are not the only ones...

Re: The answer to my own question...
Thank you Julia for the clarification. Although it makes things not really easier. In fact more confusiing. It seems that whilst they were talking about a redesign they were at the same time developing a new corporate identiy. One of which until now we know only the new name. What a mess!
