I think a intresting question would be are the other products that you can compare with the functionaly that MS SharePoint gives? I think that MS SharePoint Services are pretty great. With service I don't mean the add-ons, I mean to rent a webspace on a all installed SharePoint Server. And also alot cheaper then 5000 EURO SharePoint Server licence.

    Hi all,
my 2 cents in this discussion: What do you think is better, Ping Pong, Sqash or Tennis ? All 3 sports have much in common - you'll play a ball with a racket or paddle, your counting points to win, you'll try to defeat someone, and much more. But it is quite obvious that no one gets to the idea of comparing them honestly. So are portals.

Working in the portal space for more than 8 years I experienced this kind of discussion very often. It is technically driven. You'll never find a satisfying answer to your question on this level because in the end it will lead into a religious discussion and you have to accept other's opinions. Sure, techniques and technology are very important, especially for portals because of its complexity. But I think the answer to the question, what is better - A or B , needs to be given in the respective business context. If you find a comparison here then you can drill down to technology and software .

We should distinguish between portals and portal software. Portals are the reproduction of business requirements in an application. The portal software is the medium to obtain this reproduction. Sorry, this might be a quite philosophical phrase, but from my experience it is very important to point this out.

Portals have 2 things in common:
    - They are just responsible for setting a specific context under which subsequent applications, information and services are coupled. This context has to be set for a specific user group (employees, customers, business partners, communities, and so on)
    - Portals are integration platforms, so integration and adoption of legacy infrastructures becomes quite important
    - Portals always need to handle content (Okay, nearly always) , so handling CMS is more or less important for any portal

After drilling down portal topics from this perspective you can try to compare the vendor solutions. But if you would ask me what is better, you can bet that I'd answer: OF COURSE ORACLE IS BETTER :-))
