Happy New Year of the Dragon
2012 is the Year of the Dragon, the Year of the Water Dragon to be more precise. So what does it mean?

Each of the twelve animals in the Chinese Zodiac has unique characteristics and each year corresponds to one animal. 2012 corresponds to the Dragon.

The Chinese Dragon has been a symbol of strength and power, wealth and wisdom and considered one of the luckiest animals in the Chinese Zodiac. If you are born in the Year of the Dragon, you will assume the characteristics of the Dragon. It is considered a great honor by Chinese to be born in the year of the Dragon, which was also the symbol of the emperor in Ancient China.

So a Year of the Dragon heralds good fortune, wealth, prosperity and longevity, a very lucky year indeed.

In addition to the twelve year cycle corresponding to each of the animals in the Chinese Zodiac, there are Five Elements which are associated with their own "life force" or "chi". This energy blends with the corresponding animal, to determine that year's fortune.

In 2012, the corresponding element is Water.

Water represents flow and therefore flexibility and fluidity. Water at the same time can also be very powerful, as in the power of a flood or surging water.

These characteristics of Water combined with the Dragon's strength and power could mean a softer more flexible dragon offering plenty of opportunities for change, or an even more powerful one, making for a very unpredictable year, but one to be embraced and to take advantage of all the good fortune that dragons are known for.

Water's characteristic color is Black, so you might also hear 2012 referred to as the Year of the Black Dragon.

The 2012 Year of the Water Dragon occurs from January 23, 2012 until the end of the 2012 lunar year on February 9. 2013. The next Year of the Water Dragon will be in another 60 years.

Get ready for an exciting year and may the Year of the Water Dragon bring prosperity, wealth and longevity to you and your loved ones!
