Entertaining corporate groups in Kuala Lumpur - CEI Asia
    by Megan Gel

Groups new to Malaysia are eager to try its cuisine, but can be nervous about sampling its fabulous hawker fare. Bijan is the perfect solution, offering gourmet Malaysian fare in a relaxed setting. Choose from the main dining room (80) or the open-air terrace, which can seat 70 people. The venue will soon add an upstairs dining area.

For a touch of the past, Old China Café off Petaling Street is hard to top. Owner Leonard Tee is well-versed in corporate events and can organise performances, customised menus featuring house-specialty Nonya cuisine, as well as Chinese-themed décor for groups of up to 55 people. Many of the building’s original architectural details have been preserved and the restaurant itself evokes the social life of the Chinese communities that settled here during the early 20th century. Book out the venue for US$980 over lunch or US$820 for dinner, with a minimum spend of US$26 per person. Nearby sister restaurant Precious Old China opened as part of the US$10 million restoration of Kuala Lumpur’s 1928 Central Market. The restaurant seats 100 people amid antiques and modern art, and is located on the mezzanine floor of the market – a perfect stop following a half-day shopping programme.

The rooftop at Lot 10 on Bukit Bintang offers three distinct venues. Teeq comprises an indoor dining room seating 120 people, opening onto an outdoor bar and lawn that expands its capacity to 200 for standing buffet receptions. On the menu is Japanese, Thai, Malaysian and Western fare, all served with a metropolitan twist. Dessert highlights include deep fried caramelised banana lollipops. A typical three-course meal (without wine) costs US$35 per person. Mercedes-Benz launched its new SLS here, while Sony and Yes Mobile have also entertained at the venue.

For pre-dinner entertainment, organise a performance in the neighbouring Actors Studio, a 200-seat professional theatre. Those who want to continue on after dinner can step across to Rootz, a popular 400-person nightclub with a VIP floor.

    Best boutique
Villa Samadhi is the first luxury boutique property in downtown Kuala Lumpur, located in the embassy district near Jalan Ampang. The 21-suite property is owned and run by the same group behind Tamarind Springs, Tamarind Hill and Neo – all top choices for off-site events. The retreat was converted from a private residence and features elegant Asian décor, with beautiful fabrics from the tribes of northern Thailand hung throughout. Suites are luxuriously fitted-out with iPod docking stations, mini wine cellars, TWG teas, fresh fruit and turndown gifts of homemade chocolates, as well as Jacuzzi bathtubs and rainforest showers that often open onto private plunge pools. Host a cocktail reception for 15 people at the rooftop bar, or group dinners in the poolside Mandi-Mandi restaurant, which serves excellent Malay-Thai cuisine.
