The tourism sector, the second major contributor to GDP after the construction sector in 2007/2008 has recently witnessed a huge leap. Luxury hotel brands continue to gain major footholds in the Egyptian market. In 2007/2008, the sector witnessed the opening of the Four Seasons Hotel Alexandria, the brand’s fourth property in Egypt, and the Sofitel El-Gezirah Cairo, Sofitel’s eleventh hotel. Fairmont has also taken over the Hotel Heliopolis, to be named the Fairmont Heliopolis which will be followed by a two-year renovation project. The third property, Fairmont Nile City, is scheduled to open in summer 2008, with the first 150 rooms scheduled to open in May.
Amr El-Ezabi, head of the Egyptian Tourism Authority (ETA), declared that “As many as 665 new hotels are in the pipeline to host 16 million visitors annually by 2014, almost double the 2004 numbers.

In 2006, the Ministry of Tourism launched the National Tourism Awareness Project (NTAP), an extensive media campaign aiming at promoting tourism. The aviation industry, inextricably linked to tourism, had a very good year as Star Alliance officially accepted EgyptAir as a future member, making it the first Arab airline to join the world’s largest air alliance. Full membership will come after a transition period expected to take between eight to 12 months. EgyptAir will become Star Alliance’s twenty-first member and Cairo International Airport’s Terminal 3, scheduled for a mid-2008 completion, will become the hub for all Star Alliance carriers.

EgyptAir carried 6.5 million passengers in FY06-07, compared to 5.5 million during the previous period with a forecast of 11 million passengers annually by 2011. Delta Airways has announced reviving its nonstop Cairo-New York route, to run five times a week beginning in June 2008. Looking to develop alternative markets, including medical tourism and ‘golf’ tourism, Egypt hosted an international conference on health and therapeutic tourism, highlighting the importance of this sector for Egypt’stourism industry.
