Waggener Edstrom Worldwide (WE), a global, integrated communications agency, is hiring an Account Director (AD) in its Social Innovation (SI) practice.
This position will be based in Washington, D.C. The AD will serve as senior client liaison, and will also contribute to the growth and expansion of the practice through thought leadership, client development and marketing activities.
The Account Director will join an experienced group of communications experts from the for-profit and non-profit worlds. The Social Innovation practice helps organizations across sectors – for-profits, non-profits, governmental and inter-governmental organizations — accelerate the adoption of solutions that improve lives and transform societies. It does this by delivering integrated, state-of the-art communication services that help clients navigate the increasingly complex intersection where private sector meets public good.
Social Innovation is a natural extension of Waggener Edstrom’s agency brand. The Social Innovation practice also extends Waggener Edstrom’s core competencies by supporting our clients in the strategy, design and implementation of their programs. Our value goes beyond helping our clients tell their story and engage a variety of audiences and stakeholders in the process: we help them become the story by recognizing and supporting the complex changes that takes place in the process.
Responsibilities
The Account Director will be a key member of the Social Innovation practice, responsible for senior level account management and client counsel.
The Account Director is also expected to contribute to broader practice development efforts and to support targeted marketing, business development and thought leadership activities.
He/she will join a team of professionals with diverse backgrounds in strategic communications and consulting, public relations, public and corporate affairs, digital outreach, corporate social responsibility, change management, and partnership development.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Client Service
• Manage strategic, senior-level engagements.
• Manage and oversee large, complex programs involving large teams and budgets.
• Drive strategic planning process.
• Manage all aspects of client accounts (project plans, client deliverables, financial reporting, scopes of work, client satisfaction, resource allocation, team satisfaction, etc.).
• Develop trusting relationships, at a senior level.
• Manage, maintain and grow client relationships.
• Assure internal and external stakeholders are aligned.
• Manage and negotiate scope of work, and make recommendations for ongoing work.
• Collaborate with other business leads to integrate and drive best results for all parties.
Networking, outreach and influential management:
• Develop relationship with thought leaders and influential voices in the social innovation and corporate responsibility sector.
• Helps position Waggener Edstrom as an influential voice in the sector.
• Develops and strengthens digital and social media presence and voice.
• Manage, maintain and grow relationships with key, senior level influentials (journalists, bloggers and other social media influentials, thought leaders, etc.).
• Coach team and broader account staff on agency “best practices” in successfully engaging with influentials.
• Conceive and tell strategic stories, apart from client business milestones.
• Solicit feedback from influentials regarding their perception of Waggener Edstrom, of our client/s, their competition and their position in the industry. Use this to inform actions.
Practice development and agency business:
• Identify, assess & qualify new and organic growth opportunities (client and business development).
• Contribute to practice and agency business development and marketing efforts.
• Contribute to agency strategic planning initiatives. Educate & oversee team on cross agency activity.
• Leads team to use and apply effective sales and business development techniques to each opportunity.
People Management:
• Mentor and motivate staff with the goal of retention and development.
• Partner with Human Resources to manage employee relations issues.
• Assure team is cross-trained to be able to “plug and play” and have a broad understanding of other businesses.
• Manage up and educate VP’s and above on crisis issues, account health and client/team satisfaction.
• Oversee resource allocation across team including staffing/hiring new talent.
• Model and hold team accountable to demonstrating agency values.
Qualifications
The Account Director joins a team of professionals with multi-disciplinary skills who successfully blend sector and content knowledge, client service, and expertise in strategic consulting and communications.
He/she is expected to have the following qualifications:
Sector knowledge and technical expertise:
• Demonstrated knowledge of social innovation, public-private partnerships, corporate social responsibility and/or sustainability issues.
• Experience designing and implementing consulting and communications programs in support of organizational transformation, social innovation and corporate responsibility efforts.
• Experience managing multi-stakeholder initiatives and public-private partnerships.
• Experience managing large, complex communications and organizational transformation programs.
• Digital literacy: experience designing and implementing programs with a strong digital and social media compenent.
• Industry experience in healthcare, information technology, energy and/or consumer products a plus.
Client service
• Experience in a client and professional services environment, acquired in a top-tier communications, public relations or management consulting firm;
• Experience managing senior-level clients and ensuring client satisfaction;
• Experience facilitating complex processes and resolving conflict between multiple stakeholders.
Education and experience
• Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Affairs, International Relations or related field.
• MBA and experience in strategic business and management consulting a plus.
• At least 10 years experience in strategy consulting, communications, public affairs or public relations – in an agency and/or within applicable industry.
• Minimum of 5 years individual and team management experience, including experience growing and managing a team.
