Annother bus-story, I´m afraid.
An innocent Dublin story just came into my mind. But that was a story from ages ago. Must have been something like 25 or nearly 30 years back.
Does anybody remember that Dublin bus-conductor on some bus in Dublin (what number I can´t recall) going from the north-side right through Rathmines/Rathgar and that direction? And the special thing about this lovely Gentleman was that he was able to distinguish all single accents which were spoken in the areas that the bus was passing through. He would announce every busstop in the accent accordingly. This man took his job quite seriously. And he was even convinced that the way he was announcing the stops was suitable too. When they were going through a place like Cabra (It was some slumish area they were going through anyway) he would snort at the people who were leaving the bus and picking up the rotten way of their tounge.
When they passed Grafton Street he would put on some West-Brit-accent. Going through Rathmines though, where all the arty folks (including myself) were living he would say: "Get out. We´re in Rathmioanes. Off yiaw gaou". One stop further he would say in a posh manner: "Ladies and Gentlemen, we are now entering Rathgaar." It was only hilarious to listen to his speech. He was a show. And nobody ever felt offended by the way he was imitating those different Dublin accents.
I believe he never got the sack because he was rather entertaining, something unusual. I quite believe that there were a number of people who only got on his bus to listen to him talking.
Imagine somebody the likes of him, say, in Berlin. That would simply be off limits.
Looking forward to some more Dublin-stories - preferably put forth in English -
All the best
