Smithfield/Dublin - gute Gegend?
Hallo zusammen,

ich werde mir ab Mittwoch Wohnungen in Dublin ansehen für meinen 2-jährigen Aufenthalt. Ich habe eine Menge Angebote für Smithfield reinbekommen. Wie ist die Einschätzung der Dublin-Erfahrenden zu diesem Stadtteil?

Hallo Volker,

an der Jameson (richtig geschrieben?) Distillery, direkt an der LUAS (Haltstelle heißt auch so). Wir haben uns dagegen entscheiden, da es noch ein Entwicklungsgebiet ist und uns das drum herum nicht gefiel.

Wir haben uns dagegen entscheiden...

Kein Fehler. Das ist in der Gegend des Gebäudes von der Dublin Corporation. Ein Spezi von mir hat dort gewohnt; ihm wurde zweimal in zwei Jahren das Auto aufgebrochen und außerdem in seiner Straße jemand umgebracht. Da ist Tallaght schon besser oder Ballymun oder Killbarrack... (joking)

Hi all,

as I was growing up in Dublin, Smithfield was a very tough and dangerous area. Close by were the early morning fruit, fish, flowers, etc. markets. Also on a regular basis (I think once a month?) was a horse fair. I am not talking about highly valuable horses. So, an area that during the day was very pleasant (if sometimes smelly from the leftovers from the early market), turned into a dangerous area at night.

But that has all changed. A huge amount of money has been invested into the area. It is now once again "cool" to live directly in the city, and the number of appartments has increased in Dublin city. So Smithfield has been revamped and much improved.

Smithfield used to be very dangerous. I know it has much improved. But I am not sure if I would feel comfortable living there myself.

Also kein gute Gegend, ich wird als Frau meine Sorgen haben, aber Dublin ist viel gefahrlicher als München zB in allgemein.

My reply is much too late, but I only just entered the forum. Smithfield is fine. It used to be rough, but not it is quite trendy, with cool hotels and that viewpoint tower, forget its name. It is sort of trying to become Temple Bar on the other side of the Liffey.
It is certainly not D4 but then again, anyone who prefers the smallness of the Northside, the character, the originals and the wide streets :), would much rather go there than anywhere else.
Volker, I think your comments on Kilbarrack, Tallaght and Ballymun are a bit unfair. Yes, these areas are not all that attractive but not entirely due to people's own fault. Plus no (compared to the people living there) affluent foreigner should go and live there and provoke envy, I think. Just like it is in any other country.
I lived in Killester, in Drumcondra (2), in Skerries and loved all. I had never ever - neither in the 1980s nor in the 1990s any problem walking about at night (as woman) and mostly it just takes a bit of common sense like everywhere else.
I parked my shiny Golf with German reg plates in Ballybough a lot of nights for God's sake and it was not touched!
Jörg, I hope you enjoy your stay in Dublin and keep us posted:)

Richtig! Und mein Boss sagt, den Schnee bloss nicht nach Hannover melden, sonst müssen wir nächstes Jahr noch Winterreifen verkaufen;-)
