Egypt on Friday declared British Member of Parliament (MP) George Galloway 'persona non grata' and said he will not be allowed to enter the country in future.
"The British parliamentarian has said in media interviews in the Gaza Strip, which he entered through the Egyptian border crossing of Rafah, with a humanitarian aid convoy, that he is not happy to go to Egypt," the foreign ministry said in a statement. "However, he found that the only safe way to leave Gaza was through Egypt," it said, adding that the controversial MP left yesterday morning.
Galloway, an outspoken critic of the Egyptian government, left for London from Cairo without making a statement.
Cairo accused Galloway of inciting other activists in his pro-Gaza convoy, Life-Line 3. and in the ensuing clashes with Palestinians on Wednesday a dozen Egyptian soldiers were injured in the Egyptian port town of Al Arish.
Egypt also said Galloway, who once called for the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak during a London rally, was trying to embarrass the country.
Israel has closed its border with Gaza to all but limited supplies since the Hamas movement seized control of the territory in 2007.
Last March, Canada refused Galloway entry saying that he supported Hamas, which it blacklists as a terrorist group, like the European Union and the United States.
