New Member: Entrepreneur, Pharmacologist & Biomedical Informaticist
I'm Tom Caruso, an entrepreneur, pharmacologist and biomedical informaticist looking for new challenging opportunities. I have been in a professional academic role for 19 years and in industry for 12 years. The most recent 12 years of my career have been with Virginia Tech in strategic research management where I have been involved in proposals to government and industry that have been worth a total of more than $500 million. I’ve worked with small companies in my industry liaison responsibilities at Virginia Tech and as a business development consultant to startups and venture capital concerns.

I have focused on NIH opportunities, developing and writing six NIH grant proposals and three resubmissions, while winning and managing two awards, and obtaining a small contract. I have worked with various program and director level contacts of NCI (caBIG), NCRR (CTSA & Comparative Medicine), NHLBI, NIAID, NIDA and NHGRI, but have experience with a wide range of other federal government agencies, including the DOE as well as facilitating congressional and state budget efforts.

Prior to my experience at Virginia Tech I obtained strong software project management expertise. I have have been fortunate to attend some great universities getting a BS in biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, a PhD in pharmacology from the University of Minnesota, and a Master’s degree in management from MIT. I still have many solid contacts from these universities, and continue to keep these contacts and networks warm.

I’ve enjoyed my tenure in my current role as Director of Research Initiatives at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, and now feel it is time to look for a more challenging opportunity. I am looking to be part of a strong management team working towards a goal of helping an organization grow and make a difference, and I feel that my level of expertise working in small and large organizations prepares me for such an opportunity.
