October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Everyone thinks about cybersecurity now and then. Whether you're setting up your business' website, or opening a new checking account, or sitting down with your child to get on the internet; it's an issue that affects all of us.

Re: October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Rendell has proclaimed October as "Cyber Security Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania and urges citizens to take steps to stay safe online while at home and work.

"Pennsylvania is committed to protecting citizens' information and privacy," said Governor Rendell. "The Internet has become part of everyday life. Everyone shares responsibility for keeping cyberspace safe."

Last year, Pennsylvania was recognized as one of the 10 most digitally advanced state governments by the Center for Digital Government. Pennsylvania is also a recognized leader in cyber security issues. In 2007, Pennsylvania's information security architecture program was one of only 11 state information technology initiatives recognized for outstanding achievement by the National Association of State Chief Information Officers.

Highlights of Pennsylvania's information security program include:
Security policies for data encryption, privacy roles and acceptable use; Identity protection and access restrictions; Assessments to verify system configuration, documentation accuracy, and staff expertise;Technologies to ensure all commonwealth agencies consistently deploy security programs;Cyber security drills; and Security awareness education for employees.

Re^2: October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Since 2001, EDUCAUSE, the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and other national organizations have declared October to be National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and the University of Delaware is joining in the annual effort to promote cyber security to the campus community.

“During October 2009, we'll remind the University community how important it is for everyone to protect their computers, our network, and the information we each store on our computers,” Scott Sweren, the University of Delaware's information security officer, said.

Sweren commented that the NCSA Web site points out that any network is only as strong as its weakest link. “It's very important for each individual to understand that one person's actions can affect the security of an entire network,” he said.

This is the fourth year Rice has participated in this event, which includes weekly discussions led by guest speakers at the residential colleges. Information Security Officer Marc Scarborough said as the number of electronically-completed communications, projects and financial transactions increases, so does cyber crime.

Think before you click. Know who's on the other side of that instant message. What you say or do in cyberspace stays in cyberspace — for many to see, steal and use against you or your government.

The Internet, said former national intelligence director Michael McConnell, "is the soft underbelly" of the U.S. today. Speaking recently at a new cybersecurity exhibit at the International Spy Museum in Washington, McConnell said the Internet has "introduced a level of vulnerability that is unprecedented."

The Pentagon's computer systems are probed 360 million times a day, and one prominent power company has acknowledged that its networks see up to 70,000 scans a day, according to cybersecurity expert James Lewis.

Re^5: October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month
President Obama, who has championed cybersecurity since taking office, yesterday proclaimed that October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month .

NCSA is deeply thankful to the President and all those throughout his administration that support ongoing awareness about cybersecurity issues. The President’s proclamation is critical to raising the profile of this issue for all computer users so they will engage in the secure practices that protect their computers and the networks they use.

October is cyber security awareness month. But for those who face the multitude of threats posed by cyber criminals and hackers, cyber security is hardly a one-month-a-year issue. Deloitte’s JR Reagan and Lt. Gen. Harry Raduege talk with CivSource about how states are addressing this growing area of concern.

Re^7: October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Microsoft and the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) have teamed up again this year to help increase awareness about Internet security issues and to educate users about how to help protect themselves and their devices.

While we cannot guarantee complete safety in cyberspace, we can take steps to help prevent criminals and identity thieves from stealing our personal information and accessing our computers. We can also minimize our exposure to other Internet security risks.

Here are the steps to help protect your computer:
    •Turn on your Internet firewall.
•Keep all your software current (including your Web browser) with automatic updating.
•Install and maintain antivirus software and antispyware software from a company you trust. (See below for more information about companies that try to sell you fake antivirus or antispyware software.)
For more basic security information, see our list of security terms.

Help protect yourself against rogue security software
Rogue security software also known as "scareware" produces fake security warnings which might appear in pop-up windows as you surf the Web. These warnings are designed to trick you into downloading malicious software or into paying for software that you don't need. For more information, see Watch out for fake alerts.

    Help protect your personal information:
•Use our password checker to create strong passwords and keep them private.
    •Think before you click.
    •Back up your data.
If you're looking for a more interactive way to learn about Internet safety or to teach others about Internet safety, see our online safety videos.

Re^8: October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Dartmouth has teamed up with the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) to promote National Cyber Security Awareness Month during October. Dartmouth experts from the Department of Computing Services, the Institute for Security, Technology, and Society (ISTS), and the Institute for Information Infrastructure Protection (I3P) are rallying around the opportunity to drive home messages about keeping computers safe from phishers, thieves, and hackers. The I3P is a national consortium of 27 member institutions, managed by Dartmouth, devoted to strengthening the digital infrastructure of the U.S.

During the month of October, a variety of programs and activities will highlight the need for cyber security. An event on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. features a panel of students who will provide advice on how to stay safe online while highlighting network transgressions to avoid (held in Rockefeller 02). On Oct. 13 at 4:30 p.m. Andy Cutts, the director of Cyber Security Policy at the Department of Homeland Security and former technical program coordinator for ISTS, will talk about his role in keeping a broad view and thinking long term (held in Haldeman 041). And on Oct. 28 at 3 p.m., Dartmouth’s IT Security Engineer Adam Goldstein will host an open house dedicated to the topic of security (held in Haldeman 041). In late October (date TBD), a panel discussion co-hosted by ISTS and I3P will focus on ethical cyber behavior (details about this event will be available at: The I3P website and the ISTS website).

Re^9: October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month
West Point graduate Amit Yoran went from security work in the Air Force, the Defense Department, and private industry before being tapped as director of cybersecurity for the Department Homeland Security.

He joined DHS in September 2003 and left about a year later, the first of several cybersecurity directors to have a short tenure. Now, the 38-year-old is chief executive of security firm NetWitness.

During the first week of National Cyber Security Awareness month, Yoran talked to CNET News about his efforts getting a federal cybersecurity program off the ground, how no organization is safe from attack and why he is "anti-user." Here is the edited interview.
