World Congress on Organic Cotton
I just read about the above event. Sounds very interesting and maybe some of you might attend:

On the occasion of the UN Year of Natural Fibers (2009), the International Congress on Organic Cotton "From Fashion to Sustainability".

It is organized by Helvetas, in collaboration with the international partners Organic Exchange, Institute for Market Ecology IMO, International Trade Centre ITC, Max Havelaar and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO.

September 21 - 25, 2009 at the Casino Kursaal in Interlaken, Switzerland

This exclusive congress - which takes place beside the Organic Exchange’s annual meeting - provides a unique platform for stakeholders from the whole textile value chain to discuss and learn about burning issues, innovations and challenges in the organic and Fair Trade cotton markets. This international forum provides an opportunity to network with existing players as well as newcomers to the sector, to establish new partnerships and to discuss business-oriented solutions in the context of current global trends. Whether you are from the cotton producing, processing, trading or retail sector, from an NGO or a service provider working in the field of sustainable textile value chains, from a government institution or a labeling and auditing organisation - we would be delighted if you could be part of our discussions in Interlaken !

Some highlights of the congress are :
- More than 30 workshops, key-note presentations and panel discussions on key issues,
- A marketplace with up to 50 exhibitors,
- Flash presentations of companies and organizations,
- A large fashion show presenting organic cotton collections of Peter Ingwersen/Noir, the Italian designer Marina Spadafora and the African designers Imane Ayissi and Kofi Ansah,
- A gala dinner on a boat on Lake Thun,
- A selection of different excursions such as company and store visits and sight-seeing tours.

Organic cotton in a global context :
The congress topics will link into key global issues such as the world economic crisis, the food crisis, climate change and the growing need for companies and governments to manage risk and quality. One of the key questions at the congress - in which appears in its very title - is how to enhance companies’ and governments’ long-term commitment to a sustainable cotton sector rather than simply regarding sustainability as a fashionable and short-term trend.
