Interview of the month
Barry Gander
CEO, Networked Vehicle Association (NVA)

Executive Vice-President, Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance (CATA)

Question 1
Mr. Gander, could you please shortly give us an introduction to the CATA (Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance) and the NVA (Networked Vehicle Association)?
Barry Gander
CATA is Canada’s largest high-tech organization, representing 34,000 Canadian and international leaders who work in all sectors; roughly, any company using, building or applying high tech will belong to CATA. The Networked Vehicle Association grew out of this base; it is an international consortium of VPs of business and technology who want to integrate digital technology and its applications into our vehicles.

Question 2
Could you describe which goals you have achieved through their respective projects?
Barry Gander
We have created the first group whose prime focus is the networking side of networked vehicles. Canada has huge strength in this area: we receive 20% of the global investment in communications, even though we only have 2% of the global population. Using our strong networking ecosystem, we have pulled together the various players involved in the field, surveyed them for their strengths, united them with international partners, and created The series of Executive Workshops that continue the leaders‘focus on bankable ideas.

Question 3
…do you see a way to transfer this acquired knowledge and to apply those results in Europe?
Barry Gander
Absolutely! Through programs like the N0AE Award,
http://www.noae.com/cd/innovations-competition/noae-innovati.... which honours Canada by selecting us as the first non-European partner, we see great ties being established. We encourage research trips by European organizations, and of course we look forward to continuing to include European companies in our activities. Canada is an export-driven country, and more than half of our population has ties to Europe.

Question 4
NoAE
http://www.noae.com would like to build, in close cooperation with Canada, an International Innovation Community around the NoAE Innovation Competition.
http://www.noae.com/cd/innovations-competition/noae-innovati.... your visit in Germany in November 2009, it was your vision as well as you talked about a “UN-Project”. Do you have any other ideas about this?
Barry Gander
We continue to speak with European companies about the possibility of establishing a joint nexus, where research and trend information about the networking sector, from North America and Europe, can be combined, for universal access by all.

Question 5
Could you mention interesting events in the coming weeks or months where you think German and European companies should absolutely be present in Canada?
Barry Gander
I highly recommend the IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference, being held in Ottawa from 6-9 September. It is a leading international conference; in fact, it is the oldest and most established international conference on wireless and vehicular technologies. World-wide speakers will complement the availability of more than 1,000 research papers; tutorials and plenary sessions will be held. Contact me for further information.
