Bord na Mona is to create 300 new 'green' energy jobs across Ireland, it said today.
The company made the announcement after its annual general meeting in Dublin today where it reported operating profits of E23.8 million for 2008, a rise of E1.3 million on the pervious year.
The company said it will pay a dividend of E12.9 million. Turnover for the past year grew 8pc to E401.6 million.
"These figures provide a platform for Bord na Mona to diversify its operations and to significantly grow the business," it said.
It also published its first Sustainablity Report which set targets for the reduction of CO2 emissions and the diversion of waste from landfill over the next five years.
Chief executive Gabriel D'Arcy said the company had invested in new areas such as air and water treatment.
"We have a clear focus on diversification and expansion and we have made progress on delivering these goals during 2008, despite the difficult economic circumstances both at home and abroad." Minister for Energy Eamon Ryan welcomed Bord na Mona's strategy and said pursuing green technologies could lead to "considerable economic benefits".
"These jobs in areas such as resource recovery will reduce the volume of materials going to landfill and re-directing them for use in horticulture and energy."
