DHL closes seven depots, 320 jobs lost
Courier DHL Express is seeking 320 Irish redundancies. It is closing seven regional depots - in Athlone, Galway, Sligo, Cavan, Enniscorthy, Waterford and Tralee. It is also restructuring operations at depots in Dublin, Cork and Limerick.

The company says it is scaling back its domestic services but focusing on its core business, which is international express delivery. DHL will meet unions tomorrow.

And Cork-based Option Wireless, which makes technology for wireless communications, says it is looking for 55 redundancies.

It said the decision had been taken due to falling global demand and a re-organisation of operations throughout the company, which is based in Belgium.

Re: DHL closes seven depots, 320 jobs lost
Talks between management and unions at delivery company DHL over 320 proposed redundancies have taken place at Liberty Hall in Dublin. At the meeting the company briefed the unions on the financial situation at the company. A SIPTU statement said afterwards that DHL had promised to provide more detailed information on its proposed cutbacks, and had also agreed to enter a process with the union to look at cost saving measures on a depot by depot basis, which might avert some closures.
