Motorists will be able to drive all the way from Dublin to Cork by motorway from later today, with the opening of the final section of the road. The section in the midlands will take traffic from the Portlaoise bypass to the M8 at Cullahill.
The Y-shaped section will also take traffic from the Portlaoise bypass to Castletown on the route of the M7 to Limerick. The section, which has been completed four months ahead of schedule, will reduce journey times between Dublin and Cork by an estimated average of 45 minutes.
Work on the remaining sections of the motorway to Limerick are due for completion later in the year. The section being opened today has cost 491m euro. Motorists will pay a toll of 1.80 euro to travel on it, with higher charges for trucks.
