Gas and ESB tariffs to drop from May 1
The ESB has been told to cut prices by an average of 10.3 pc from May 1 for residential and small business customers.

The instruction has come from the Commission for Energy Regulation in a decision just issued.

The watchdog says the move brings forward a decrease that would have been expected in October 2009,

Large energy users will also receive a reduction through changes to theiur payment mechanisms.

The CER says the precise decrease faced by a particular customer or category of customer will depend upon the characteristics of that customer's load and connection to the network.

The watchdog says it does not now expect any further fall in ESB charges later in the year.

Gas prices are to come down by 12pc from May 1 for home and small business users, under a further decision by the CER, also just issued.

And the watchdog says that if global gas prices stay low, then there may be another cut in prices later in the year.

Fine Gael spokesman Simon Coveney has criticised the small size of the gas price cut.

"We need to bring some relied to businesses and household owners in terms of energy costs", he said on radio this morning.

"Last September we increased gas prices by 20 per cent so by reducing them by 12 per cent now we still have a net increase of 8 per cent and that simply does not tally with the international wholesale price for gas at the moment."

CER spokesman Dermot Nolan said this morning that at the time of the 20 pc increase, international wholesale prices would have warranted a 40pc rise.

"Overall we have tried to smooth the gas prices out over the year," he said.
