Bill Evans(not a XING member)Innovating and its Beginnings
I am not an innovator. But I have spent my career working with and for business and product innovators. What I have noticed is that the innovators who went onto commercial success, often despite themselves, were keen observers. They used observation to develop their innovation. These people did not have a brain storm in the middle of the night but over time observed certain things that they thought were interesting. Not just for intellectual interest but in what they observed could used to germinate ideas that would be profitable products or processes.
I worked with a Cardiovascular Physician some years ago, who was a very talented and gifted technician, but who had limited business sense. What made him successful, besides hiring in the best talent for his enterprise, was the ideas for products he saw from observing the day to day environment in which he worked. We all observe our environments but he, and other entrepreneurs like him, study and look at their environment from many angles and avenues. Constantly observing and analyzing.
Truly observing requires an open mind, intellectual curiosity, and the skills to observe.
Mr. Dibyendu De, of Kolkata India, has written an article titled: “Observing from the Antumbra Space”. This is a thought provoking piece on how we observe. Of course the ability to effectively and rigorously observe is a critical element in problem solving and for innovation.
