Conan O’Brien recently agreed to return to late night television … on TBS? As a passive follower of the controversy that began in late 2009 around NBC’s decision to yank the Tonight Show from O’Brien, I expected the fiery-haired comedian to either move to Fox (as many sources believed he would do) or would make like Scrooge McDuck and take a dive in a swimming pool filled with his $32 million in settlement cash from NBC. Apparently however, discreet talks began a few weeks back with TBS.
This saga is quickly becoming a cautionary tale in the popular imagination. Conan was promised the Tonight Show five years ago and then muscled out in favor of Jay Leno returning to his old time slot. While NBC was doubtless eager to have such a proven combination (Jay Leno + Tonight Show) back when they were hemorrhaging viewers, the humble audience couldn’t help but feel for Conan. Especially when Leno’s new (now cancelled) 10’o’clock show was the cause of the ratings drop off that sparked the shake up.
In human capital terms, this is an enormous win for TBS since Conan has stepped down from the Olympus of network television to the puny mortal upstart of a basic cable network that mostly runs other peoples’ shows in syndication. However, it may be a win for Conan O’Brien as well.
Although he’s probably taking a pay cut with this move, he’s not exactly hurting for cash. And since he’s the big star he’ll probably get the freedom and respect he didn’t feel at NBC towards the end. Looking across the business landscape, we doubt that Conan’s the only one getting ready to bolt.
