The FTSE 100 fell towards year-lows on Friday, with mining stocks leading decliners after Anglo American cancelled its dividend, stoking fears about capital positions in the heavily-weighted sector.
Anglo was the biggest single faller on the market, down 10 per cent to £11.07, after it announced it was suspending its dividend and share buyback programme and cutting another 9,000 jobs after reporting a 1.1 per cent fall in pre-tax profits.
There were broad falls right across the sector. Xstrata lost 7.2 per cent to 668p, Rio Tinto fell 6.8 per cent to £18.64 and Antofagasta fell 5 per cent to 432p.
