Jakarta celebrates its 484th anniversary this year, with organizers rallying around the theme of “The better we manage Jakarta, the more we love it”. Here are the voices of some Jakartans who want to love the city.
Luna Maya, actress
We need a city that is safe, one in which we can roam freely without having to be afraid of anything. We also need a clean city that is comfortable and supported by sufficient transportation facilities, such as side roads, wider streets and cleaner and more secure public transportation.
We also need better city parks and therefore, we need better city management concepts. The city must also better manage street vendors. Strict rules are also needed for vehicle owners so they become more disciplined. All that can be achieved if we start to discipline ourselves better.
Administration officers must also commit to making a change. This means that they must also practice self-discipline to set an example to make all the above come true. If they make rules, they must make sure those rules are imposed and followed. They must not let the rules they make become meaningless.
All I want is a Jakarta that is flood-free, secure and clean. Traffic jams are difficult to avoid because all major cities, like New York, Paris and London, face such problems. But in those cities the traffic jams are somehow more manageable, while here, they are completely chaotic.

We have to understand that we contribute to building the city. We pay taxes to build and renovate public infrastructure, so it is silly if we do not take care of the city.
The authorities should be transparent and abstain from corruption. They should hold regular workshops and seminars about how our tax money is managed. These activities will also increase people’s awareness that the public places are theirs, so they should maintain them. I hope that existing infrastructure, most of which is in a poor condition, will be renovated.
I hope Jakarta will be free from congestion and pollution. This city can become a safer and nicer place to live in if the administration increases security.

The Jakarta administration needs to establish better communication with residents, who need to be aware what’s going on in the city.
The administration has to make clear to residents what they are planning and what kind of city they want to build. The city actually has many good planning programs, which sadly the public remains unaware of.
The residents, not knowing what the administration has in mind, do not know how to support and show their appreciation for what the administration has done.
I dream of a Jakarta that is metropolitan but orderly, where every resident is given equal space and opportunity. For example, the administration needs to get rid of the slum areas, but also provide slum dwellers with proper housing. Jakarta will also need a strong measure of law enforcement — something we don’t have.

We should always remember that this city belongs to us. We make money in this city.
I believe people would still care about this city if the authorities, from the lowest levels to the highest, invite residents to engage in gotong royong (community joint efforts).
I want a Jakarta with a low cost of living, a good and stable economy and low crime rate.

We need frequent cultural festivals in Jakarta to introduce residents to all things related to the city and its culture.
The administration must put their complete focus on improving infrastructure to solve the flood and traffic congestion issues. The city’s residents face the daily stress of massive traffic jams. To address these issues, we need self-discipline.
How can we expect to have a strong sense of belonging in this city if we continue to get mad because of countless public infrastructure problems? Most residents also feel insecure living in the city especially at night.
I want a Jakarta that is comfortable and clean.

We have to be able to build a positive image of Jakarta. We should not feel that we are commuters who make a living in this city, we should also love Jakarta. We should be able to take part in building a better Jakarta and finding a solution to the problems of pollution, garbage and traffic congestion.
The authorities should set the example of how to love this city. They should be closer to the people, as well as give them a sense of security. The administration should also draft better plans for the city, making it clean and green.
I hope Jakarta will be clean and green, with no traffic congestion or floods.

As an athlete, I really wish Jakarta had proper sports centers. We already have the facilities, but most of them are not in good shape. They are dirty and stink. I sometimes feel uncomfortable exercising there, but I have no choice.
The Jakarta administration needs to immediately start paying more attention to the condition of those sports centers, because as far as I know, they are not really good when it comes to maintenance.
People should also start to participate in taking care of those sports centers. How? I can’t answer that. It really depends on awareness. I know I haven’t done much to take care of the sports centers either, but at least I don’t damage the facilities.
Apart from sports centers, I think Jakarta also needs more open space so that people can exercise and do other outdoor activities.

The administration must be stricter (in imposing regulations). It is like the success of the seatbelt rule: It works because the government is strict about the rule.
To make it work, the administration should deploy security officers in public places to make sure rules are obeyed.
I want a clean Jakarta with no traffic congestion.
