Although the financial crisis has to some decree stalled the steep growth of the global agricultural markets and reduced the significantly increased commodity prices, the agricultural and seed industry is suffering the least from the crisis. The high remaining demand in combination with price pressure is leading to increased challenges regarding the IP system for seeds on a global scale.
Several important legal cases are pending which will further clarify the scope of patentability and protection for plant-related inventions. In addition, the disputes within the seed industry between technology providers and more traditional breeders are becoming more heated.
This conference will give an overview of the available protection mechanisms, their strengths and weaknesses, recent developments, and the upcoming challenges and questions of the future.
