To celebrate the 250th anniversary of Handel death, the choir and orchestra “Laudamus Te“ (We praise You) are embarking on a concert tour, including seven concerts in the months of September and October. Approximately 60 singers and musicians, as well as vocal soloists from Germany, Israel and Brazil will perform Handel’s Oratorio “Saul” (composed in English) in both Israel and Germany. It is the fourth German-Israeli project since 2004, under the direction of Monica Meira Vasques. One of the main goals is to develop and maintain friendships with the Jewish people. Through the common language of music, solid and long-lasting relationships can be established over the years.
“Saul” is often viewed as one of Handel’s most dramatic Oratorios. The premiere took place on the 16th of January in 1739 at the King’s Theatre in London. Hardly like any other Oratorio, the close relationship of this work to opera is demonstrated by its breathtaking dramatic conception. Handel ingeniously achieves a wide range of expressive characterizations, showing the incalculability of Saul as well as David‘s virtuous character. On the one hand, the choir is part of the dramatic story, yet it also takes on the role of a commentator in other instances. The work is a challenge to perform for an orchestra that, in Handel’s time, was one of the most colourful yet: in addition to an ordinary opera orchestra, trombones, harp, and kettledrums are also employed.
The concerts in Israel will take place in the Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem, in Ein Gedi in the south of Israel (one of the historic places mentioned in the account of Saul and David), as well as in Kfar Blum in the north of the country. Additionally, at the end of October there will be four concerts in the Stuttgart area, one of them in Stuttgart’s largest concert hall, the Liederhalle.
