UK Businesses Failing to Cut Travel; Corporate Social Responsibility Programmes Overlook Employee Travel

Interwise research finds that more than half of firms have not reduced business travel.

LONDON, UK, VLAARDINGEN, NL– July 6, 2007– The failure of UK companies to reduce business travel is not the fault of employees, research from Interwise finds. Even though employees state they would readily adopt greener remote working practices, the initiatives to help them aren’t being formed in corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes.

The findings highlight that business travel is clearly an area where companies can trim costs and lessen their environmental footprint by enabling remote working practices, but for many, there is no clear “owner” within a corporate organization to drive the initiative.

Seventy-seven per cent of respondents to the Interwise survey said that they travelled to up to three meetings per week, and yet more than half indicated that their company had not cut travel for meetings. The research also found that employees believe that at least half of these could be held virtually.

“Ownership of green initiatives within CSR and similar programmes is proving a key differentiator and driver amongst enterprises looking to unlock the benefits of remote working,” comments Tony Gasson, VP International, Interwise. “Executive committees are needed to provide strategic direction and drive efficiencies through organization-wide programmes such as travel reduction.”

“From talking to customers I’ve found there are three broad approaches taken to CSR and its influence on business practices. The first is the ‘evolved’ company that has set up specific task force or executive level committee to assign ownership and to drive value from CSR. The second strategy tends to come from firms that operate in sectors that create a large carbon footprint, such as manufacturing or energy companies. These organization’s strategies tend to include production- and product life cycle-oriented measures. The third group are mature companies that use technology to address efficiency. These companies work closely with the board to identify technologies, such as collaborative conferencing, that deliver sound environmental benefits while also benefiting the bottom line,” added Gasson.

Virtual meeting technologies enable remote working to move from a 'nice to have' corporate periphery, to business critical, among forward thinking companies have not just limited their environmental impact, but have made significant cost savings by reducing travel and by improving efficiencies. Metso Corporation, a global engineering and technology corporation with over 25,000 employees working in more than 50 countries , saved more than €3.5 million on travel and conference calls in 2005 as a result of implementing Interwise Connect for its enterprise conferencing.

Interwise believes that there will always be a need for business travel; for the purposes of relationship building or where there is either an introductory or social component, or some form of conflict or protracted negotiation needs to be addressed. But both executives and employees need to learn when it is appropriate to travel and when a greener practice is possible.

In Metso, Interwise’s technology has enabled more effective group meetings because specialists can participate for half-hour updates via Interwise, rather than not participate at all because such a short appearance is not worth the cost or time to travel to the meeting.

Interwise, the global leader in unlimited voice, web and video conferencing for the enterprise, announced the findings which are part of ongoing study into corporate practices and employee attitudes towards remote working.
