  İzmir Cabbies Desperate

  Cabbies in İzmir are complaining that they are going through a rough time because of the global financial crises, high prices of fuel and the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality’s move to allow public transportation tickets to be valid for 90 minutes.
  
  Most cabbies who bought new cars with bank credit can’t pay their payments and some have sold their new car to clear their debt.
  
  İzmir Motoring Federation Manager Celil Anık said, "Most of us use diesel oil and the money we earn goes to oil." But it is not only the high fuel prices; it is also the opportunity to repeatedly use one ticket for public transportation within one and a half hours that is troubling the cab drivers. "The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality’s new rule application has hit us hard," he said. "We respect the social aspect of the municipality, but we have to earn money, too."
