hello everybody,
i just want to draw your attention to the 90th anniversary
of the Bauhaus. founded in 1919 at weimar the bauhaus
was a highly innovative institution that applied a holisitc
approach for educating designers and architects.
the education model is shown in the graphic here:
http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Datei:Bauhaus-prog...
on remarkable fact is that in the early years a prep
course was held that gave students insights into basic
material handling and material capabilities.
i think we would be much more successful in lean
transformations if such a prep course would be held
before, giving insights into the basics of learning,
insight and group dynamics.
they also head a very integrated teaching approach.
it consisted mostly work done in labs leas by so
called masters. a lot was learnded hands on.
as an institution the Bauhaus was rather fragile.
founded in Weimar they had to move to Dessau
and then Berlin due to the political pressure of
the rising nazi party. it was shut down after they
took over power.
as a center of new approaches to design, architecture
and education, however, the Bauhaus was spectacularly
successful influencing the whole 20th century and beyond.
the pattern is everywhere the same: bring together
the right people, give dem just a basic structure and
then let them follow their passions. you will be
surprised by the results!
should you have the time and money, don't miss out
on visiting the Bauhaus locations at Weimar and Dessau -
and the remarkable buildings, for example at
Stuttgart-Weissenhof.
best regards,
gerold

Thanks Gerold for posting that insight ful post:-)
After 1933 quite a number of members of the Bauhaus
fled Nazi-Germany and became famous in the USA.
Somehow we had the innovative thinking of doing
more with less already installed in institutions at
the Bauhaus, Garden City Hellerau
(
http://riemerschmid.5eins.de/riemerschmid_im_werkbund/garten...).
Of course it is difficult to recapture what has long gone, it is
doable and already done.
Lean Thinking arrives at a much earlier phase and
the pre course to the Bauhaus studies captures neatly
what was asked by the future students:
seeing the things that surrounded them differently and
co-create the new future together!
Coincidently, exactly 100 years after the establishment of
Hellerau a new innovation nucleus is coming from
Dresden;-)
Cheers,
Ralf
