Although the installation is not as easy as with the Suse distribution you'll be happy with the handling of configuration files and the update/package management.

Isn't control the most important thing a admin should have?? After all, if one manages the installation (I agree, it isn't that easy) one ends up with a extremely stable, fast (Compiler options to fiddle around) and reliable system.
In my Opinion this all is worth the trouble, and in addition to that you learn a lot about the system.

the speedup is almost negible.
In my Opinion this all is worth the trouble, and in addition to that you learn a lot about the system. I think this is the only valid point one can make for Gentoo. You really learn a lot. But that
does not make it a useful distribution for production servers.
