I've been interested in open source technologies as well as open content for learning for several years now. OS has pretty well entered the mainstream now. A few years back it was difficult to have a serious business discussion around open source. Now, OS is part of most IT strategies. Academic organisations have been a bit slower to adopt OS, from what I've seen.
I discuss OS issues on my blog

I agree with you on that. The last few years have been instrumental for the development of great open source software. New Web 2.0 Read-Write functionality is accelerating this trend although there is still a lot of work to be done regarding copy write etc.
I loved the Larry Lessig presentation that you referenced “How creativity is being strangled by the law”

Yes, our laws and policies are changing much slower than our technologies, entrepreneurs and social sectors. There's bound to be some upheaval.

There are many active communities around open source for learning and i would suggest that you get involved in the conversations on the Web. What communities (corporate, public education, etc) are you interested in?
