    Contemporary African Art and its controversies
    Dear group members,

    I am currently looking for contemporary African artists (painters, photographers, sculptors, performance and installation artists) resident in Germany and most favourably in Berlin.

    This project aims at filling the void existing in the African art scene in Germany and more importantly, it aims at redefining and re-orienting contemporary African art from the "primitive-art" conotation, with which it is still labelled today, to a well-earned contempory-status, defined by itself.

    It is difficult to find African artists in Germany who earn a living from their artistic profession. This is not only due to a stereotypic curriculum followed by Galleries, enthailing a minimal value for "non-european art" and especially art from Africa, but also due to the systematic misconception of "contemporary art" by gallerists and art institutions around. What is contemporary art? Is contemporary art defined by a time axis or a geographical axis or both. If contemporary means "belonging to the same period of time" or "current", then I guess art of today in Bolivia must be as contemporary as art from Germany or the UK. Or is "contemorary art" in the north more contemporary than that in the south?

    So is it also difficult to find a gallerist in Berlin (a city of 3,4 million inhabitants) who has the guts to expose an African artist, who is not specialised in "trash art", "recycled patches" or masks to fulfil the pre- and colonial view of African art as primitive!

    Sicher? Meiner Beobachtung nach liegt die Afrikanische Kunst sehr weit vorne und scheint mir beinahe so im Trend zu sein, wie die Chinesische Kunst es zur Zeit ist.
    Die letzten documenta-Ausstellungen zeichneten sich stark durch ihren Afrikanischen Einfluss auf. Auch die DakArt wird immer mehr zu einem geläufigen Begriff in der Kusntszene und in Chicago finden wir ebenso einen hohen Stellenwert für die Kunst dieses riesigen Kontinents. - oder habe ich hier einen falschen Eindruck erhascht?
    Warum nun die Berliner Galerien angeblich keine Afrikanischen Künstler ausstellen, weiß ich nicht, schon deshalb, da ich nicht in Berlin lebe, aber vielleicht hat es einen ganz einfachen und prakmatischeren Grund.

    Auf jeden Fall habe ich persönlich schon sehr sehr viel Afrikanische zeitgenössische Kunst gesehen - die oft einen intensiven Eindruck bei mir hinterlies, und der war auf keinen Fall primitiv!

    Es gilt hier, glaube ich, zu differnzieren zwischen volkstümlicher und zeitgenössischer Kunst - die volkstümliche Europäische Kunst wird wahrscheinlich in anderen Kontinenten auch stärker vertreten sein, als unsere zeitgenössische. Ein einfacher und auch verständlicher Effekt, der nicht wirklich etwas mit der Diskriminierung aktueller Arbeiten zu tun haben muss.
