I would like to know how people in Europe perceive indigenous Australian Aboriginal art. I expect the average person would not be familiar with it at all, or the knowledge would be rather superficial, but I am interested in views of art experts, gallery owners and such.
Thanks!

Hi,
Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. It is Cheryl from Artemis of Aberdeen. I am interested in developing Aboriginal Art - as yet I am to locate an artist in this genre. But I would love to show a committed Aboriginal Artist.

Do you mean the dream paintings which periodically have come into popularity. With this precious work it's been a shame that various artists have copied them and in doing so under valued in some way their importance. I once had an exhibition in London where the gallery next door was selling this work, claiming some of it to be originals. Maybe they were but I met the artist who was painting for the gallery, he worked at night in their basement.

Yes, one of the most important things in Aboriginal art is to ensure it is authentic. There were many cases of non-authentic art being passed onto less knowledgeable people, mostly tourists and visiting collectors at high prices. But that is the case with any art - other artists' work gets copied and forged! Your best way to ensure the authenticity of work is to have a certificate of authenticity and recently many artists have been diarising their work (especially large commissioned paintings) with digital photos showing them with artwork progress. My artist is providing the same for collectors who are regularly commissioning art... It is a great addition also to the collection, artists often do have good talents in photography :-)

Hi Cheryl,
I would be very happy to work with you on preparing an exhibition of David Dunn at your gallery. His works sell well and are popular in Europe, we sell a small collection every now and then...
Let me know if you are still interested.
