Ferrero and Hershey are trying it again
Ferrero USA and the Hershey company announced yesterday that they have agreed to set up what they call a joint warehousing, transportation and distribution deal.
The alliance is expected to improve supply chain efficiency, reduce logistics-related costs and enhance competitiveness.
In a statement Hershey explained that the two companies will also work together to maximize corporate social responsibility efforts with the expectation of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and energy consumption in warehousing and freight, with fewer vehicle journeys needed to move products to customers.
John P. Bilbrey, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Hershey Company, said, "Ferrero is a respected international company with a portfolio of successful brands... Collaborative supply chain operations are a growing trend across industries as companies seek to fully leverage their logistics infrastructure. Although we are initially focusing on one region of our business, we are excited about the full potential of this project."
Giuseppe D’Angelo, area manager for Ferrero Anglo/Americas, says: “We are in the early stages of launching this venture but are already excited about its potential to improve supply chain operations. Hershey is the ideal partner to work with us to achieve this goal.”
The agreement does not include manufacturing, selling or marketing activities and improvements are expected to start being realized in 2012.
Could this be a first strategic step towards a stronger form of cooperation in the future? As we remember, already in 2009 Ferrero approached Hershey to save via a joint bid Cadbury from the advances of US-based Kraft Foods.
So, we´ll be closely observing any new movements…
