    Menswear - Luxury
Reports say that more men are spending more on Luxury fashion such as bespoke suits, accessories etc....and that menswear market is growing at quite a high rate. I would be interested to know what people think and what we consider luxury in fashion as opposed to Designer brands.

    Designer Brands vs Haute Couture
For me, I consider brands like Hugo Boss or Ralph Lauren as "designer fashion" while Dior or Versace is what consider to be "Haute Couture". Armani is somethign in between.

When I talk about "luxury goods" I think of bags of LV.

    What do you think?

Re^2: Designer Brands vs Haute Couture
In my opinion, I feel that most designer labels including Dior, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Calvin Klein etc and any who produce a high-end ready to wear products are just "Designer Brands". I would differentiate established old "Maisons" like Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Asprey who can also produce one-off, exclusive items, bespoke to a Client's requirements at any price/cost. These to me are true Luxury Brands.
Haute Couture is another strand of this sector. The word "couture" has become diluted and homogenized for the mainstream and gets used for many product categories that are not really true couture at all. Real Haute Couture is as it suggests - a one off piece of clothing that is produced to your exact mesurements, usually hand crafted and hand finished to the highest standards by seamstresses in an Atelier with no others being produced.

Re^3: Designer Brands vs Haute Couture
The elegance, luxury and haute couture, has been invented by French when young, carismatic king, Louis the XIV decided to enter France into a legend.

In the 17th century, at the begining of Louis XIV reign, France was not specially associated neither to elegance nor luxury. But at the end of his reign, the ensemble of occidental world acknowledged French being the supreme judge in matter of style & taste while the country found its economical mission: reign as a master of the luxury products: jewelery (Chaumet, Cartier) gastronomy (Fauchon, Hediard, Dalloayau) , mirrors, china, furniture, shoes, umbrellas, coffe, perfumes etc ).

    1. Classical Luxury
Most companies were established in the 19th century: Hermes, Baccarat, Saint-Louis, Louis Vuitton, Puiforcat, Bernardaud, Porthault…
From 1900 to 1950 major high fashion houses were opened by Elsa Schiaparelli, Gabriel Chanel, Christobal Balenciaga, Jean Dessès, Jacques Fath, Janne Lanvin, Marcel Rochas, Robert Piguet, Lucien Lelong, Pierre Balmain, Jean Patou, Christian Dior etc. They all benefit success from loyalty of their clients film stars, queens, princess, ultra rich personalities. Each couturiers design himmself and manufacture in their own atelier while seasonal collections dictate a style in vogue.

    2. Modern Luxury
The shift form couture to designer brands has started in the 60's with young generations reject of the high fashion and luxury styles, rebel against bourgeois values, accepting street styles, influenced by Mary Quant, Biba store and mini skirt revolution. The futuristic young designers: Cardin, Courreges, Rabanne, Castelbajac, Rykiel or Laroche will develop ready to wear fashion brands gradually replacing expensive hand made, tailored and unique garments.
The prodigious Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy and Scherrer will become a reference in France, in USA Ralph Lauren and in Italy in the 70's by Giorgion Armani and Mario Valentino.

    3. Contemporary Luxury
In the 80's new designers of high end ready to wear : Donna Karan, Calvin Klein Krizia, Missoni, Fendi, Feraggamo, Biagotti, Versace, Kenzo, Gaultier, Montana or Mygler having their own atelier for the production or not will base the creation upon “in house styling office” elaborating prototypes. Usualy the collection series are produced by domestic manufacturer or dislocated abroad where the labor is cheap but qualifayed.

    4. Towards Immaterial Luxury
In the 90's the war in Irak and terrorism including global fear, insecurity and new economy will impose dramatical change. Some haute couture houses having sold so many licenses and have lost control of the brand identity were froced to stop and reinvent. The promising ones were bought by powerful investors and groups operated by luxury groups & holdings having as goal a heavy stock value. Nowadays amazing publicity campaigns and excellent know how and above all the ultra quality service, determine the success of luxury leaders like: Bottega Venetta, Jil Sander, John Galiano for Dior, Dolce & Gabana, Alexander Mc Queen, Gucci and Prada.
