UK: Large retailers promote organic food
UK's biggest grocery stores are trying to boost sales of organic food. Supermarket chains promoting organics include Asda, Co-op, Sainsbury and Waitrose, reports the Independent. The promotions are mainly taking place during the Soil Association's Organic Fortnight, which runs from September 6 to 21. The chains are also focusing on promoting basic brands since evidence emerges that consumers are now favouring cheaper produce.

Asda is decreasing prices on everyday items and offering food sampling across 250 stores. The chain states they do not have a decrease in sales of organic products. A spokeswoman of Waitrose, which also promotes some products during the fortnight, says that the company has seen a change in the type of organic products being bought. Value-conscious customers are focusing on areas they feel are the most important. They show increasing concerns about animal welfare, for example. The managing director of Abel & Cole states the market is slowing, but his company is still experiencing growing sales. Abel &Cole has a 20 % price promotion on most lines from mid-September. Co-op's price promotion, cutting 20 % on organic produce, has already begun in August.
