Universities are getting a higher awareness for the environment in the United States. In the Environmental Protection Agency's "Green Power Challenge" universities compete to see who can purchase the cleanest energy. Colby College was leader, offsetting 115 % of its energy. Various other ones were offsetting their power by 100 %.
Smith College students have just started to learn how to minimize their impact on the environment on and off campus in the program, "Sustainability and Ecological Literacy". Topics include recycling, how to live without a car, energy conservation and organic food. During the program, students will tour a power plant, take nature walks and meet people in charge of the college's environmental efforts. The college hired a sustainability director earlier this year. More dormitories are becoming LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified. Duke claims the first platinum LEED rating for a campus residence. Many other schools have silver- and gold-rated dorms.
Organic food is also an important issue for college students across the country. Many schools offer organic products from fast food to gourmet meals. Yale's has got an organic cafe, and there is a farmers' market at Brown's. The University of Minnesota uses locally grown food and composts its waste. Organic to Go fast food kiosks can be found at the University of Washington, in many of the state schools in California and at Georgetown University. A blog was started at Colgate University - “Organic on the Green“ - to chronicle schools' efforts.
