Hallo,
have somebody experience with this law of the European Community regarding the import of fruits and vegetables from countries outside the EU? It seems to be a outmost complicated and costly way to do the things right. I am interested on fruits and vegetables that are part of everyday's diet on another country, but are not commonly known in Europe.
Regards,
Juan

Dear Juan,
we are an importer of organic foods and have encountered the issue of novel foods frequently. As far as I know, any foodstuff, that has not been used in the EU in "reasonable amount" until 1997 or so, is considered novel. If it is novel food, the trader must proof its harmlessness to humans by independent research, which can be extremely costly.
I think my colleagues have given up on most of the herbs and spices, just because the low trading volumes would not have justified the enormous costs for the research.
Regards,
Christian.
