Gruppen-Newsletter: PMI Group in XING supports virtual team research
Dear members of the PMI Group in XING,

many of us are PMP's and part of this status requires us to participate actively in the development of the profession. Within this scope, the PMI Group in XING is supporting the virtual team research being carried-out in a collaborative initiative between the PMI Chapter Frankfurt, the University of Applied Sciences of Darmstadt, C.I.T. - Cork Institute of Technology and GeProS GmbH. The experiment will research the productivity of virtual teams and what are the key drivers in virtual team performance.

After the first round of the experiment about the improvement of virtual team work beginning of this year, a new round of the VT experiment will be on January, 19th, 2011. The first round took place with participants from more than 22 countries, and despite the high effort of time judged as a unique and very valuable experience by most participants. Many of the lessons learned from the first round have been implemented. The analysis of the results is still ongoing.

Participants are invited to look forward to an exciting tour de force into and through the global project team world, can look out for PDU's and rely on an expanded network of structural and individual support for all participants.
For this round there are two sponsors participating: STS will provide access to their brand new training simulator for virtual teams, based on their well-known project management simulator SimulTrain. Participants will get free access to the beta-version. Also VEA will allow participants free access to their innovative virtual team support portal.

"What exactly happens in virtual project teams, is, up to know, largely unknown“, states Ralf Friedrich, coordinator of the experiment. "This experiment will help us to discover correlations within the processes of the virtual teams and enable us to forecast performance.“

The experiment will research the productivity of virtual teams and what are the key drivers in virtual teams.
The experiment will have a duration of 3 months, starting 19 January 2010 and demand appr. 60 hours of commitment over the whole period.

Participants will be grouped into international teams and work on a project that is to be delivered within 12 weeks, the creation of a small web portal. To make communication more easy, they will work with avatars, virtual representatives in the virtual world Second Life. As a matter of course they will get to know innovative approaches in virtual project management. Participants will receive a certificate and PDU's. For the extended support we charge a commitment fee of €99,- for the whole period. This fee is necessary to avoid the high-drop-out of participants during the first experiment.
