    patterns for sharing knowledge
For several years I am fascinated by patterns [1]. Hence it comes as a wonderful surprise that I found a pattern that comprehensively captures the gist of pattern languages [2]:

We stand but on the shoulders of giants.
For Sir Isaac Newton, perhaps, that was true. Yet many of us are still hanging on at the breast pockets, belt buckles, and shoelaces of the giants. You have to give us some credit, though—the giants were a heck of a lot shorter in Newton’s day.

Context: My father likes to tell the story about a particular field trip he took when he was a senior in high school. All of the students in his typing class got on a bus and drove to a town an hour a way to see—drum roll please—an electric typewriter. I wrote my first computer program when I was nine years old. My father was in the twelfth grade the first time he studied algebra. I was in the eighth. The pace of innovation is increasing. The breadth of knowledge that young people need to acquire by adulthood is expanding rapidly. Unless we find new ways to pass on knowledge and wisdom to our young people, we may be in a lot of trouble.

Patterns and pattern languages have emerged as one of the most powerful vehicles for passing on not only our design knowledge, but our design wisdom as well. Therefore understanding patterns and how they can be put to best use is a subject worthy of our attention.
